Dear Esther Speedpaint by charcoalfeather Dear Esther Speedpaint by charcoalfeather
3.5 hours in Photoshop CS6. This was my first time trying to paint landscapes in Photoshop. I think I'm pretty satisfied with this.

This is a scene from the wonderful game Dear Esther. It's the third level, in which the player character finds himself inside a cave, waiting for rebirth and metamorphosis.

I used these brushes for some of the patterning: [link]

Thanks! Yeah, it's a river. Have you heard of this game, Dear Esther? Technically, it's more of "walking simulator" than an actual game, as people have pointed out, as there really isn't a concrete objective in the traditional sense. You walk around a beautiful island and caves and listen to a very abstract monologue with flowery language read to you by a posh sounding guy with a British accent.

Never heard of it.
Seems it's more of a relaxing experience than anything.

Yeah, but I still paid 10 dollars for it. I think it was worth it for some reason.

Yes, it's inside a cave; this is from a game called Dear Esther, which is not really so much a game as a 3D visual novel that lets you explore an island while listening to a post-modern narrative. :p

Thank you for your kind comment!

There's Korsakovia, which was a Half-LIfe 2 mod made by thechineseroom and Jessica Curry. It's really similar to Dear Esther, as a result. There's also the indie game "Light" made by a Russian indie game maker in UDK that's apparently is similar too, but I haven't tried it.

I have never played this game, but the painting is wonderful. the Rocks (can't remember what the icicle rocks are called) look believable. Also I love the contrast of the warm oranges and yellows, against the cool blues. really makes it stand out. The water is magnificent.

Thank you for your detailed comment!

The icicle rocks are stalagmites (from the ground) and stalactites (from the ceiling).

Really great job getting the light to hit the rocks well. I always have trouble with that but it looks really good here. One thing I will say is that it looks like some of your shadows behind the spires look like they might be going in not quite the right direction. Overall, though, great piece and superb use of color

Thanks for the detailed comment! It's really appreciated.

I was thinking along the same lines about those shadows too, but since I referenced this from a screenshot I took in the Dear Esther game, I just thought I would follow along with the original game design. The light sources for some of the features in the game, such as the blueish spires, is also a bit confusing, but meh--it's fantasy, I suppose. In a real cave, a couple of candles wouldn't be able to light it up that well.

Oh yeah no problem! I always prefer some constructive feedback myself, so that's what I try to give.

The details were mostly just scribbles and scratches and blurring afterwards to make the scribbles blend in better with the rest of the piece.

Thank you! This is also a pretty cool game you should try out. It's similar to Amnesia in that it's also supernatural fantasy, and it also has a couple of ghosts you can see. It's 10 dollars though, and unlike Amnesia, it's more experimental and doesn't really have a coherent storyline.

It's more of a peaceful game than a scary one.

Do you have steam, by the way?
