"Ugly ducklings" are cygnets though. This is a gosling, so of course it's not ugly! Though cygnets are not ugly either and are also adorable as hell.

Also how do you find these little guys? I live near the river but I've only ever seen grown ducks.

These guys are usually with their parents in May or April. They're only babies for around a month or so though, so it's understandable they're not so easy to spot.
