He was no Parzival by charcoalfeather He was no Parzival by charcoalfeather
Finished July 17, 2015.

One of Mitya's favorite activities growing up was reading. He often liked to read outside and his favorite genre was anything fantasy-related and later, when he was older, anything about foreign countries and sometimes even philosophy.

He read anything he could get his hands on, honestly. He didn't like reading the stuff that the teachers assigned though. He thought they stiffled his mind.

Yuriy, on the other hand, just read anything that was assigned.

In this picture, Mitya is about 15-16 years old, just one or two years younger than he is in the Basmachi series.

About the Title:

I've been reading the Wasteland by TS Eliot recently. As such, I've been thinking about the whole Parzival and wasteland connection.

A strange thought suddenly came upon me: Mitya as Parzival, the seeker of the Holy Grail. In the Arthurian legend, the Fisher King/Wounded King is the last in a long line charged with keeping the Holy Grail. He is always wounded in the legs or the groin region and is basically impotent (this refers to the old idea of king representing country and thus, this means the country itself is infertile and has become a wasteland).

In the same way that Parzival is supposed to seek the grail to heal the King (and thus heal the land), Mitya sought (in Basmachi and even before it) to heal Yuriy and in a way, his own broken family. I wonder if Yuriy can be seen as a Fisher King like character. Here is someone who seems to be extremely wounded by something and, although not directly asking for it, seeks to be healed. Like an impotent old man, he seems to be drained of vitality. He believes there is no meaning to his life and moreover, that he deserves nothing because he is little more than a cog in a (horrifying, boring, destructive) machine (called society). If he disappears off the face of the earth, he thinks, no one would care, least of all himself.

In Eschenbach's version of Parzival (1210), Parzival is able to find the grail and cures the Fisher King. In TS Eliot's poem The Wasteland, there is no such solution. And perhaps, there is no Fisher King at all. In Eliot's modern wasteland, there seems to be a total lack of unity. Everything is fragmented, confused, fractured. Just like Yuriy's view of himself/the world. Like the Fisher King, Yuriy is sterile (well, his mind is, anyways): he is always obsessing over the past and unable to create anything new

But then, there was ONE thing in his life that gave him a sense of meaning--the affection of his brother, Mitya. After Mitya's death at the hands of the Basmachi (*cough cough* Chinghiz), Yuriy wastes away even further. He locks himself away from society after the war ends (Trek Along the Amur, the miniseries about him traveling to the Far East, may actually symbolize his locking away of himself from society rather than an actual, physical trip to the Far East--I mean, did he really even have a reason to go there physically?), wishing that he would just disappear altogether. As in the Wasteland, winter's numbness is preferable to spring. April is not cheerful to people like Yuriy--it is painful, as it reminds him of a more fertile past--that is, his childhood with Mitya.

The first "Parzival" figure has been shot down...will there be another in Yuriy's life? Hint: that's what the next miniseries is going to be about.

Disclaimer: All characters and concepts (related to my characters) are by me. Mitya and Yuriy are from my original series, Basmachi, which can be read in my gallery.

The Wasteland is by TS Eliot, as mentioned above (and should be obvious).
Parzival is an Arthurian legend. And obviously, I did not create the idea of the Holy Grail.

I think this is one of the artist's best portraits. The treatment of the leafy branches is fantastic. The facial expression conveys serenity and contentment. Our eye is drawn first to the face then down to book and finally all that glorious foliage. Good job!!! The artist has a very distinctive style, and it is one especially suitable for illustrating a story. One could point out the hair looks hastily done or that the hand grasping the tree branch looks unfinished, but in fact these details are unimportant and insignificant to the over all composition of the illustration. I especially like the shadows and folds on the shirt.
What do you think?

Thanks so much for the great comment! I like to reveal different facets of my characters every time I draw them so I myself get to learn more and most of all, get feedback from you all so I can think about more things about the characters!

Thanks so much! :D Yep, but not only to help his brother. More about himself as well. Though from Yuriy's POV (because he's self-absorbed...), he tends to interpret everything about his brother as somehow having to do with him. xD

That won't happen, I'm sure. c: Happy ending for once.

Yeah, it's a huge contrast with what happens later. :/

Thanks! Haha, yeah, that hand...I got lazy there, you got me! :D

I had fun with the description. I just recently started re-reading the poem and I was like, DAMN, that reminds me of something...so I instantly decided to write the description here before the idea faded out of my mind. xD That's another reason I left this picture in my sta.sh for so long (actually...there are some things in my sta.sh that are even older. Some even from early June and I still haven't written the description yet, since I have no inspiration lol), because I wasn't quite sure what to write in the description.

I have the same thing going on with descriptions - something I think of really fun ones as I'm drawing something but by the time I'm ready to upload it I FORGET and can't think of much to say! :XD:

Yeah xD

lol.

Btw, Shavkat, Mansur, and Aynabat hate Chizuko so much it's not even funny anymore. They think she's rude and disgusting and even when she's trying to reach out and be nice to them, they ignore her and act cold.

Wat...
But she is just cold on the outside o_o What could offend them so much?

xD

Because they think she's looking down at them, which annoys them greatly. So they are going to triple the coldness towards her and ignore her whenever they see her.
