Navruz by charcoalfeather Navruz by charcoalfeather
Happy Navruz, everyone! Nooruz/Navruz/Nowrooz is the spring "New Year" holiday, also known as Persian New Year, as it originated in Persia and was associated with Zoroastrianism. In Farsi, Navruz means "new day," as it marks the first day of the New Year.

In Turkestan (modern day Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, etc.), Navruz is celebrated during daytime hours. March 21 is the main celebration. For the next 13 days, people go to visit friends and relatives and buy plant seedligns of fruit trees. They will also buy new clothes and clean up their houses. The activities of the 13 days are considered predictions of the coming year, so everyone is nice and forgiving (or try to be) during this time. To ensure good luck, people are encouraged to be kind, witty and pious.

Chinghiz is shown wearing a Uzbek tunic here, probably given to him by Mansur and his family. During his years in Turkestan, after Daniar's death, I would imagine he was often involved in many celebrations in Mansur's family along with Shavkat (who, as you may remember, had most of his family die during the famine of 1918 so he was taken under Mansur's wing for the most part and hung around him a lot).

Pardon the hurried nature of this piece: I haven't had much time to draw recently. It's near the end of the semester and everything is in a "crunch." At least I made it in time for Nooruz!

All characters here belong to me and are from my original series, Basmachi

Lollll xD

Thank you, I'm really glad you think so. I think the major difference is that my digital work had that bluer background thing which cannot really be done traditionally

Wow, I really like the pattern of Chinghiz's clothing and I like how it matches with the texture of the background - great work!

Thank you! Haha I don't know that much either, just basic stuff xD

Yes, this is shortly after he was taken in by Mansur and Shavkat so he is still very young, traumatized and confused about what he can do in general. Following instructions at this time makes him feel more comfortable

But enough to slip in lots of facts here and there. :D If you were doing too much complicated stuff, nobody would get it unless they already knew the basics, right? :D

I can understand that!

Thanks so much! Just as I learned a lot from your drawings and writings as well! :D

It does seem like Chinghiz just wants to silently party and drink tea peacefully. I think Mansur would be more radical (at least having louder parties) and actually hosting parties. Chinghiz will probably just stand there at the side

Random question, what do you think would happen if medieval Chinghiz and Mitya somehow bumped into your characters if they traveled to the West? :D

HAHA I actually thought about that too! :excited: In my story "The Berserker", Yngvar and Hakon are in Kievan Rus which the Norse called Gardariki, so they could have met! (it happened two centuries before your story, but that's a minor detail :P) They would make a big party and solve quests! I think Yngvar would be very interested in Chinghiz's culture, being so different from his own, and he would want to know everything about it. He might be annoyed at Mitya at first though, cause he's a kid and Yngvar is very serious and with a short patience, but then he'd start to like him. Hakon would get along great with everyone, but he would make a goal out of getting Chinghiz and Mitya very drunk and then laughing at them. :D Aidan (if he were there too) would be good friends with Chinghiz ^^

What do you think would happem?

Haha, two centuries is just a minor detail  That would be really awesome! Like in an RPG, all of them would form a party? Yngvar would clearly be the strongest person there and be the leader, whereas Aidan and Chinghiz have more like mage (IF this were fantasy) roles...

Hakon would be so friendly, lol, and he wants to get both of them really drunk? Gosh, even Mitya, who is a kid? That's so unethical! I think Yngvar would be rather intimidating to both Chinghiz and Mitya. At least Hakon would make things better and provide team camaderie. I wonder if Hakon is "coarse" (in some ways, anyways) enough to remind Mitya of his father.

I like this RPG already!

Yeah, exactly! Aidan is definitely a caster class, dark priest or something. And Mitya is a hunter then, since he has a bow like in the rusalki story? :D Yeah, Hakon is very immoral from many points of view, so he'd find it especially funny if Mitya got drunk, he'd maybe use the chance to play some awful prank on him too  Hmm, Hakon is pretty depraved (with vices like drinking and women, mostly), but he's a kind guy, by medieval standards at least (unless he's on a raid, cause then he takes stuff seriously and one would not want to be his enemy!). Here are my 8 random facts with him that might give a better picture. Do you think he would remind Mitya of his father in these respects? Also, how similar is his father in this medieval AU to the regular Ardalion?

Indeed, it is pretty awesome :D

Sounds like Mitya would be a good hunter, indeed. Lol, yes, I read the facts before, and it does seem like Hakon would remind Mitya of Ardalion. Yes, Ardalion is quite similar in this AU as well, maybe even a bit worse.

Hakon would definitely get along well with Ardalion, who would invite him to a feast or something!

Thanks so much! Yeah, Turkestan had/has a very Persian based culture, especially in settled places like modern-day Uzbekistan, which is/was part of the Persian cultural sphere. It's only the nomads, like Kazakhs and Kyrgyz (especially the ones who didn't settle in cities) who are less Persian-fied.

Definitely! But they have to keep up the good work for 13 days for good luck~
