Owlpocalypse by charcoalfeather Owlpocalypse by charcoalfeather
Inspired by a conversation with :iconeternalwinters: about one of my favorite children's series (at least when I was a child), the Guardians of Ga'hoole, which features a gang of anthropomorphic owls.

Just a partly-machine owl with blood in the background. Probably a Pure One on steroids in a post-apocalyptic setting/cyberpunk or something. This was originally supposed to be a "pimped" version of The Shattering's cover, but that never came to be.

What I originally wanted this to look like, but since I knew I would never be able to finish it, I just did this instead:

Background textures from www.cgtextures.com

Yes, I started drawing animals again.

Painted on Corel Painter X, 2.5 hours.

c) Kathryn Lasky and her Guardians of Ga'hoole series

Yeah, those eyes are pretty freaky, especially since you now know it's a robot.

Then why the blood? :stare:

Dramatic effect. Also thought I needed to put something in background so the bird wouldn't blend in with the texture.

"Just a partly-machine owl with blood in the background. Probably a Pure One on steroids in a post-apocalyptic setting/cyberpunk or something." <--- This cracked me up.

Also I think that is Ginger, although there are debates which owl that is.

Also, I think you should post the other version you have linked there, thats also quite cool.

Love the grungy texture effect behind it. Beautiful detail on the owl as well!

I loved this series. Nyra was always my favourite. She was an awesome antagonist, especially when she ripped the heart out of her own sub-ordinate!

looks absolutely fantastic. Love the feel of the composition as a whole. The background textures matches the gritty tone of the way you painted the owl and it works well. Great job

Nice job!
Great job with the feathers of the owl! They look smooth but rough at the same time! (Love its texture)
I like the anatomy of the owl! It's just awesome!
And good job choosing colors, I really like the way you added the white as 'bright'!

Very nice work! I really love the face and the background. I'd kind of like to see just a tiny bit more detail in the right-hand wing and around the legs -- not too much, as they aren't the focus of the picture, but they seem slightly muddy or blurred compared to the rest of the picture. Otherwise, this is very strong. I love the color palette!

I think this is one of your best piece I've seen so far, I can't even complain of any errors since I'm actually far from good at painting by myself so! =) To be honest though, I love this drawing background for the way they look now, but that's maybe because I wasn't so found with the other background you were planning to paint.

Me too. I spent an hour doing that other background too, LOL. I'm glad I gave that one up and my eyes were already starting to hurt by then.

Thanks for your kind words) You should try using Corel some time.

I read Kathryn Lasky when she did Dear America books... but never read Ga'hoole; I was already 14 when they were released so I was like "warrior owls? wtf?". But Lasky is a good writer. C:

I like his face, and the way you colored him!
The eyes and eye socket fur are great!

Haha, true, you are older than me. I didn't know she wrote "Dear America" books, though (well, I always thought those books were really boring anyways and not for my demographic group).

Thanks)

Oh, really? I don't know about that. Never was really into "diaries" sort of series.
