Theodosios by charcoalfeather Theodosios by charcoalfeather
A drawing of Theodosios for :iconakitku:, who is another winner of my OC contest! Theodosios is one of her OCs from her "Tale of Byzantium and Persia," which can be seen here: akitku.deviantart.com/gallery/….

I referenced his lovely outfit from this picture she drew of him here: fav.me/d4sygan

Yes, everything was drawn by hand! Originally, the mosaic was just a pencil sketch (no, I didn't draw each of the tiles in pencil), but then, as I started colouring, I thought about making the tiles digitally. So I created my own brush (I might upload it sometime) to make the tiles. Basically, I just created a randomly shaped polygon with the lasso, coloured it in, and made a new brush from that, adjusting for the brush tip shape and size, jitter, etc.

I decided to make Theodosios kind of smirk a bit, as I was a bit inspired by this picture (fav.me/d5utiq2 ), where he's kind of looking scheming or devious.

Zoom in a bit to see his heterochromia, too. You can't tell from the thumbnail, but once you view it in full, you can see that one of his eyes is brown and the other green.

Thank you so much! Actually, the mosaic didn't take a very long time, due to my brush settings on PS6!

Thank you! I'm glad you like this one. Yes, that mosaic--I am proud of it to this day. It didn't take a very long time though. With a custom PS brush, I was able to finish that mosaic in 20 minutes. I "drew" lines in the background and the tiles just came out on a line. So I didn't have to individually "stamp" my pen a couple thousand times to get this result. Thank gods.

Yes, I'd figure the light source would be specific because he's inside a dark place, where there's probably only a candle or some other "weak" light source.

Ah, but you still had to colour them, and give them shades so each one looks individual >.> Not to mention the different angles, like the ones in the halos.

I actually didn't have to colour them! The brush did the "colouring" for me. xD The brush settings really helped.

Wtf, you can do that? (.. Oh yeah, you're not using Gimp though xD dammit.)

Photoshop, yeah, has that function.

I have no clue how to use Gimp, in all honesty. I tried once and I got horribly confused.

Nah, it's actually pretty simple once you get the hang of it. Probably the same for Gimp too, but I haven't tried. I heard Gimp might actually be better for the textures.

Thanks! Yeah, he's susposed to look a bit devious here.

Not really, actually! The brush I made helped me a lot.

But the brush - as far as i understand - was just one polygon, right?. You had to stamp it on the canvass a few thouand times... and in different colours... How long *did* it take to finish?

It used the two colours in the colour selector. For example, if I wanted lighter brown and darker brown, then that came out were alternating the two colours. I just "drew" lines across the background and the tiles came out "in the line," if you know what I mean. I didn't have to individually stamp them.

I think the drawing itself was probably 30 minutes and then colouring the character was another 20 minutes and then the background was 15 minutes?

Ah, i was under the impression that when you drag a brush it just creates a line... I'm not too knowledgeable when it comes to digital art, sorry >< Thanks for clearing that up!
The timing seems quite impressive... No wonder you are so productive!

Some brushes actually can "scatter" some shapes; that's what I meant. I didn't realize until I started playing with the settings, either :P

Thanks. I realized that if I don't set a time goal for myself, I never get anything finished . So it's kind of necessary for me.

I really need to start working on my digital skills then - it looks like some of my misgivings may be the result of ignorance :)

I know what you mean with time goals - i have realised that in my case work *always* fills the space provided.

No problem at all! I'm very glad you liked it! The mosaic was very fun to draw and I learned how to make the tiles look convincing from drawing this picture :)

Thank you! I actually didn't expect the mosaic to come out so nicely. And originally, I had thought of drawing the mosaic tiles by hand. That would've taken forever.

It's a little too similar to what already exists, so once I make a brush that's a little more original, I'll upload that one.
